Since it is Women’s Month and Women’s day had already passed, we thought it appropriate to talk about women in the IT industry.
Women in IT are a minority. The question is: “Why”? The answer might be
simple. IT roles have always been stereotyped. Think tall and lean men, with
slightly dishevelled hair and thick brimmed glasses.
So it is no wonder why women don’t want to choose a career in IT. IT is
a guy’s job! Since they think IT is dominated by males, they don’t even want to
consider applying for the jobs, even if they are better qualified.
But isn’t it about who gets the job done? Now is the time to encourage
more women to choose a career in IT. “This is about providing more
opportunities and stamping out inequalities”, says Nick Heath, author of the
article Want the right techie for the
job? Employ more women.
“Trying to ensure that both sexes get a fair chance to get ahead in IT
isn’t about forcing people out of jobs they were born to do, it’s about giving
people opportunities to fulfil their potential whatever their gender.”
Women need more role models to look up to in the IT sector. You can
make a difference. Dare to make that IT career choice, be a success and don’t
be shy to broadcast it to the world! You are the only one that holds the keys to
your career.
