The matric results are
out and while some are ecstatic to get accepted into the tertiary institution
of their choice, others are not so lucky.
According to the
article “Varsities swamped” on www.timeslive.co.za
there are only 127 827
places for first-year students at the 22 full-time universities in South
Africa.
- 35 500 matriculants have tried to get into Wits University, which admits 5 500 first-year students;
- 75 000 people applied for one of 10 500 first-year places at the University of Johannesburg;
- 16 000 applied to Stellenbosch University, which has 5 000 places;
- More than 25000 applications were received by Port Elizabeth's Nelson Mandela University, which admits 5 800 first-years;
- 40 000 applied for one of 4 000 places at the University of Western Cape;
- 27 435 people applied to the University of Cape Town for one of 4 200 places. Some 19 838 of the applicants were matriculants;
- 6 500 people applied for 6 900 places at the University of the Free State; and
- 80 000 people applied for one of 14 000 places at the Tshwane University of Technology.
It is not a great feeling to be turned down and those who did not get accepted might feel that their future career dreams are crushed. But that is not necessarily the case, since there are more places to go and study than universities.
