Youngest Student to Certify at CTU

11 February 2013, young Giovanni Joubert from HoĆ«rskool Zwartkops completed his CompTIA A+ certification exam at our CTU Pretoria campus.  Now when we say young we mean 13 years old, the youngest student to certify at CTU Training Solutions in history.

The CompTIA A+ certification comprises of 2 exams, 22-801 CompTIA A+ Essentials and 22-802 CompTIA A+ IT Technician. The international, vendor-neutral certification proves competence in areas such as installation, preventative maintenance, networking, security and troubleshooting.  CompTIA A+ certified technicians also have excellent customer service and communication skills to work with clients.

Giovanni lives a quiet life. He develops Android applications and got recognised as a contributor and themer. He was also approved 3 months ago by XDA Developers a group of developers who make custom roms and apps.  Giovanni was inspired by his Android cell phone, which he found to be slightly slow and decided to do something about it.  Giovanni plans to complete his CompTIA Network+ and Cisco Certification in the future.

Giovanni has just raised the bar and set the standard for IT excellence!  This is what makes CTU so proud, and gives us the absolute passion to develop ICT professionals.  We are happy that Giovanni chose us to be his IT Training Solutions Partner, and look forward to seeing him in our campuses in the near future.

CTU going digital

Walk around any city or town and what do you see? You see young people text messaging; commuters jamming to their iPods; friends snapping photos on their camera phones. Look a bit further and you see doctors' decisions aided by patient information called up on hand-held devices; teachers using wireless technology as tools; parents printing photos on cordless printers before leaving their children's football games. Look further still and you see executives going digital and cutting billions of dollars out of supply chains. And if you go to Africa or India, you may even see wireless devices providing opportunity in communities that don't even have electricity.

We are entering an era where everything is going digital. It's going to be the main event of our lives for decades to come and at the CTU Career Campus we are doing the same, GOING DIGITAL.

Every process, in every industry—from banking to academia and from medicine to international security—is beginning to follow that same pattern. It's empowering, but also a bit scary, because it's a leap into the unknown. Nobody knows for sure how to equip themselves.

We have seen this digital movement in Tertiary providers, Primary and High schools in South Africa and in 2013, CTU will offer BYOD (Bring your own device) to our students. We are slowly moving into the digital age and to be honest forced to make this shift sooner rather than later. Africa. Microsoft will this year provide digital training manuals and therefore CTU will need to make provision for a digital academic year.

We hereby invite all students that own a laptop or tablet to “bring your own device” to the campus. This device will aid you in your learning, as you now will have the digital training manuals on your own device and can comfortably study or work on projects at home. Laptops that adhere to the minimum PC requirements will be loaded with the selected software * provided to CTU students and can be used during the academic year at CTU.  The benefit of making use of your own device is that your projects can go home with you and you can fit in extra study time and practical time.

* Adobe special offer to students to be confirmed.

For your convenience we include the PC requirements list and encourage all students to purchase the following computers or bring the tablet/laptop you do own to upload digital training manuals.

CTU will make provision for students who do not own or not able to purchase their own device.

Best of luck for 2013…enjoy this exciting digital movement.

Windows Server 2012 feedback

Quenn van Niekerk, a 2012 graduate from CTU Training Solutions Pretoria & the lucky winner of the Microsoft Windows 8 Slate, dives down deep into the new Microsoft Windows Server 2012 technology.  This is what he has to say about the new technology.

As a student, how did you find Windows Server 2012 as a new technology in comparison to Windows Server 2008?
I found the new Server 2012 to be a long awaited arrival. The new Metro style GUI and Aero (or Transparency) features give Server 2012 a brand new and exciting look, but besides the look of server 2012 I found the new server manager with the new server groups feature to be a good change from 2008. I personally enjoy the new direction Microsoft has taken with server 2012. The start menu is something that needs getting used to, but isn't a pain after you have mastered the Hot Corner features. I'm also excited about the new Resilient File System (ReFS) which will be better in protecting against data losses.

What is the main feature of Windows Server 2012 that stands out for you and why?
For me the main feature that stands out would have to be the Hyper-V replication features.  As I use Hyper-V Virtual machines a lot, replicating them from one computer to another over a network connection is a dream. Without the need for any shared storage.

Microsoft refers to Windows Server 2012 as being the only OS to be built from the cloud up, what does this mean to you?
What this means to me is that Windows have created an OS that is specifically suited for the cloud environment which will allow for alot more agility and flexibility.  This is going to allow for reduced costs and efficiency in the network, by adding Hyper-V Network Virtualizations and new storage option within the cloud computing environment which in turn largely reduces hardware costs.  It will also allow the new server manager to manage and control local as well as remote servers. Cloud computing will also allow Server 2012 to provide not just storage in the cloud, but also apps with the windows azure technology.

What do you think are the main advantages for Small to Medium size businesses implementing the new Windows Server 2012?
I think there are still a large amount of advantages for small to medium size businesses, because of the new technologies implemented in Windows Server 2012. For example: the Dynamic Access Control and Access-Denied Assistance which controls access to data on file servers more granularly. They will also gain in processing power with their heavily loaded websites with the improved CPU Throttling in IIS 8. Not to mention the new Server manager with the new server groups and Hyper-V replications are only a few things to name which will provide the businesses with so much more possibilities and improve overall productivity and proficiency.

You are now a qualified MCSA Windows Server student, where do plan on going from here?
I plan on furthering my studies in the IT field in specialising my MCSA and possibly getting my MSCE.  And I will also be studying other courses in IT such as CCNA and CCNP.  Then when that is all said and done I hope that I will be able to get a company that would like to use my skills in furthering there growth in IT and as well as mine, by providing me with a decent career.
