Are You “WITH-IT”?
Cloud computing is the delivery of computing as a service whereby shared resources, software and information are provided to computers, and also other devices, as a utility over a network. Cloud computing is a general term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the Internet.
A true cloud solution is one where users can access a flexible volume of services, as needed, via the Internet. It is one of the fastest growing development sectors in the world due to the expected demand.
There are 4 different types of clouds, namely Public, Community, Hybrid and Private (with Public and Private as the 2 main clouds).
Public Cloud – A public cloud is a service that anyone with a network connection can access. A service provider makes resources (e.g. applications and storage) available to the general public over the Internet.
Private Cloud – A private cloud is infrastructure operated only for a single organisation, is managed either internally or by a third-party and is hosted internally or externally.
Community Cloud – A community cloud shares infrastructure between several organizations from a specific community with common concerns.
Hybrid Cloud – A hybrid cloud is multiple cloud systems (private, public and community) that are connected in a way that allows programs and data to be moved easily from one deployment system to another.
Benefits of cloud computing:
· Shared development costs on business applications;
· New functionality;
· Organisations only pay for services and space it uses.
According to IDC predictions for 2011, 80% of new software will be available as cloud services; by 2014, over one-third of software purchases will be delivered through the cloud.
Get ready for the cloud with Microsoft Training and Certifications.

Launching the CTU Newsletter

It is with great excitement that we launch the first edition of the CTU newsletter. We have decided to add a communication channel to our clients, vendors, business partners and friends in the ICT community.
Please check out our newsletter and let us know how you experience the CTU community. We will appreciate all your feedback and contributions as our newsletter grows.
Wow!! What a turbulent year we have had! We started off with a brand new VPN and moved to our own private cloud and implemented all the latest Microsoft programs from Office 2010 to Lync, CRM, SCCM, Exchange 2010, SharePoint 2010, Server 2008R2, etc. The result is that we are now operating in the cloud even though we initially battled to get our Network correctly configured.
It is a giant step forward!
We felt the financial crisis in the number of cancelations we received in February in our career division but nevertheless we have been able to grow our student numbers by 11%. We have had a drastic increase in the number of 2nd years and will be pushing a significant number of professionals in the market from now to March 2012!
The CTU Highlights for 2011:
- CTU has trained a significant number of BI’s, SharePoint, Exchange and SQL Pros and has squarely entered the Professionals market.
- We have grown our corporate market share to over 35% and have concluded numerous SLA’s in 2011 which have been renewed for 2012. Watch this space!!
- We ran the Hot Labs and Prometric testing centre at the Microsoft Summit and Tech-Ed in Durban.
- We have established our CISCO market after becoming a CLP in 2010 and trained over 200 CCNA’s countywide.
- We have launched our first International ICT Tour to the USA and it was a revelation to the students how big ICT really is.
- Since joining the Microsoft Learning partner channel we have once again managed to be a finalist in the category Training Partner of the year award.
- Expansions, yes of course, we opened new branches in Cape Town on the Foreshore in June, PE in October and Durban we have offices but will be officially open in March 2012!
- How will we improve our service to all our clients? We have launched our new recruitment company, CTU Recruits, and plan to add significant value to our career students and corporate clients by connecting ICT professionals and companies with each other. We welcome Ms Claire Rayneard to our team to head up this division. So if you have any ICT HR needs we can help!
- We have had numerous graduations of Learnerships that we concluded during the year and the most significant was Henneman, BCX, and to come Bloemfontein, Stellenbosch and Gauteng.
- In total 1800 Qualifications and 8000 certifications.
- I have had the privilege to be appointed to the Microsoft Partner Advisor Council and had a most informative meeting in Seattle in October.
If I look at the above we have had once again an extraordinary year to say the least. The question is what does 2012 hold in store for CTU?
We will drive hard to make our national footprint of 16 locations work for us.
We salute our clients for their support and faith in our ability to deliver Human Resource Development solutions for them.
We salute the different vendors like Microsoft, CISCO, Adobe and Autodesk for continued support.
We thank our International Exam partners Prometric and VUE.
We are very grateful for MICT SETA for great service and support.
To conclude our first newsletter I want to salute all the CTU employees who are the real heroes of our success and I am confident that even in these trying times we will continue to grow and develop people as ICT professionals to serve and develop our lovely country South Africa.

CTU Sponsors Microsoft Tech-Ed Hot Labs, Self-Paced Labs and Prometric Testing venue
CTU was the proud sponsor/exhibitor at this year’s Microsoft Tech-Ed and Partner Summit. We were responsible for the hosting of the Self-Paced labs, Hot Labs and the Prometric testing facilities.
CTU was responsible for delivering labs to delegates at Tech-Ed, for technologies that Microsoft had identified as crucial to the deployment of Cloud Technologies. This was delivered very successfully by two of the CTU Facilitators who were able to shed more light on the various Microsoft Technologies.
The Self-Paced labs were also hosted by CTU, where delegates could see the new technologies that were presented in various sessions. Here the delegates were offered the opportunity to go through new technology labs and see what was on offer. This was very successful and the feedback was good.
CTU agreed to host the Prometric Testing venue, where delegates could write their International Certification. Well done to all who passed!

CTU Boksburg Creative Exhibition
10 November 2011 was the long overdue date to give the 1st and 2nd year AUTOCAD and Graphic and Web Students recognition for their outstanding designs during this year.
Boksburg Campus became the space in which the art objects met their audience. The students presented pictures, drawings, videos, digital art, interactive art, websites and building models.
Individuals from the industry were invited, along with fellow students, parents and future students. Anyone involved in art knows how fast trends come and go and how many hours goes into each piece. It was the exhibitions goal to build each exhibitors reputation, and give them the exposure that they deserve.
The response from the audience was that they were pleasantly surprised to see the high quality of designs and creativity. The students can look back on a year of sweat, guts and loads of fun.
We admire the students of Boksburg that eat, sleep and live for their passion!

CTU students do it again: Their involvement with their community on specific projects is commendable
At each of our 10 career campuses, all our students under the determined eye of the SRC, are encouraged to dedicate their time and effort to serve their community in one way or another. Pretoria Campus stood out amongst all the other campuses by dedicating a huge amount of time and effort to support those in their community who are less fortunate than they are. The SRC organised a whole variety of activities to ultimately raise money and give their time to the helpless and the underprivileged.
At the beginning of this year they chose to support the Potato Foundation, who is responsible for underprivileged children and providing what they need (i.e. food, sports equipment, and shelter for the homeless children). Students from the Pretoria Campus decided to hold a Barefoot Day to experience first-hand what it felt like not having shoes. Facilitators and staff alike donated enough shoes to fill two large boxes for which the staff of the Potato Foundation was most grateful.
RAG was another great social event which forced the students to work extremely hard, all in the name of charity. They worked long hours building a float and then had great fun collecting money by means of “blikskud”. The photos should say it all.

The big drive this year was their continuous support for the WetNose charity. WetNose is known as the no-kill shelter that looks after rescued dogs, cats, horses and other farm animals that have been neglected, abused and confiscated. Rehabilitated animals are up for adoption as soon as they recover. R800 was raised by the students on Charity Fridays where they donated dog and cat food and blankets for the cold winter months that followed.
Each Friday students took turns to drive out to the shelter and assisted in walking over 200 dogs, to the great delight of the shelter’s staff, who had limited resources. The students had very emotional experiences but admitted that it made them feel very proud and they are still involved in contributing of their time to this noble cause.
Success reigns as 86 previously disadvantaged learners from in and around Phomolong graduates in Hennenman
In partnership with MICT SETA, who provided the funding, BULA, the company managing the project, and CTU Training Solutions, this training provider successfully trained 86 unemployed youth from in and around Phomolong township, who all proceeded to graduate on the 15 October 2011.
The Municipality of Matjhabeng kindly provided their community centre as venue for the Learnership. CTU moved in with their mobile unit consisting of 100 laptops and a server, and under the stringent eye of their Learnership Project Manager, Mrs Elsie Rautenbach, and her facilitators, 86 learners were found competent under difficult circumstances.
Elsie Rautenbach - Learnership project manager, CTU;
Mr Jabu Sebuko - MICT SETA;
Antoinette Reitz – COO, CTU.
Because of the inaccessibility and shortage of companies in the rural area in and around Henneman, it was not possible to host the learners for their workplace experience modules, but CTU was able to compromise on this challenge. By introducing Virtual Labs which substituted the workplace experience precisely as required by the unit standard outcomes, the learners all obtained the necessary exposure to successfully complete their workplace Portfolios of Evidence!
The honourable guests present at the graduation were:
Mr Jabu Sibeko from MICT SETA
Mr T. Rulashe – Matjhabeng LM SDF
Mr Buthelezi – Matjhabeng LM Training Office
Me Mfebe – Representative of the Mayor’s Office
Me Antoinette Reitz – CTU Training Solutions COO
They all motivated the learners with their inspirational words of wisdom to strive for excellence in all that they do.
After an emotional rapture of the National anthem the graduation was inaugurated and the dignitaries proceeded to hand out the prestigious National certificates to the learners under thunderous applause from the proud parents and learners alike.
Two young Ladies, Me Sharon Tladi & Valencia Khasu, simultaneously achieved the “Top student of the Year” award and each received a hamper gift pack for their achievement, and so did Jonas Lichakane as runner-up.
Mr Mothobuka from BULA was the MC and delighted the audience with his quirky humour and professional conduct. After graduation, photographs were taken and everyone enjoyed light refreshments.
For the 86 previously disadvantaged youth the future looks much brighter now and CTU prides itself to have been instrumental in die development and training of each of them.
